Commonly referred to as the wiper linkage, wiper transmission, or wiper sub-frame. This unit is connected to both wiper arms and located beneath the vented plastic cover at the base of the windshield.

What does this part do?

The wiper transmission serves as the primary link between the wiper arms and the wiper motor. As a system of metal rods and bushings, the transmission allows for the transfer of motion from the motor to the wipers.

How do I know if this part needs to be replaced?

Normally, the linkage will fail when the connecting bushings (usually black in color) fail and break / disconnect. This will result in the wiper motor still running, but the wiper arms (one or both) will not move properly across the windshield. The connecting bushings cannot be bought separately and the linkage must be purchased as a whole replacement unit. Typically this repair is made once in the lifetime of the vehicle, although factors such as excessive wiper use, engaging wipers under pressure (covered in snow or ice), etc can contribute to early failure.
